Expecting? Watch Out for These Skincare Ingredients

Hi there!

ETT: What skincare products should you avoid when pregnant?

Ladies listen up, this ones for you!

As soon as you find out you’re expecting, your whole world changes. And that might include your skin care lineup too.

Here are four ingredients that need to be avoided while pregnant:

Benzoyl Peroxide above 2.5%: Benzoyl Peroxide is a common ingredient found in many skincare products that treat acne. Generally, it is safe for use while pregnant in low concentrations, but anything above 2.5% needs to be avoided as its absorption rate is higher which can be harmful to your baby’s development. If you don’t know your product's concentration, stop using it and consult with your esthetician.

Retinol: Retinol is a form of vitamin A known for its anti-aging abilities and can be very helpful in treating acne, fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Retinol, and all forms of Vitamin A, should be avoided while you are pregnant. High doses of Vitamin A have been linked to birth defects.

Salicylic Acid: Salicylic Acid is another common ingredient found in many skincare products. It is well known for its ability to exfoliate your skin and treat acne.

Hydroquinone: Hydroquinone is best known for its ability to treat hyperpigmentation and eliminate dark spots. It is actually banned in many countries due to its high cancer risks. If you ever get your hands on this, don’t ever use it for more than 3 consecutive months.
