Exfoliating Scrubs and Inflamed Acne - What You Need to Know
Hello there, and welcome back to Esthetician Tip Tuesday!
Let’s address a common skincare mistake: using exfoliating scrubs on inflamed acne.
If you’re struggling with breakouts, using physical exfoliants may do more harm than good. Let’s explore why and discuss better alternatives.
You cannot scrub acne away. Using exfoliating scrubs on inflamed acne can exacerbate the issue.
When you use physical scrubs on sensitive skin, you risk:
1. Causing more inflammation: Exfoliating scrubs can irritate and inflame your skin, making acne look and feel worse.
2. Damaging your skin: Scrubbing too hard with select scrubs can cause micro-tears in your skin, leading to long-term damage.
3. Spreading bacteria: Rubbing your skin with a scrub can spread bacteria, worsening your acne condition.
4. Compromising your skin: Over-exfoliating can strip away your skin’s protective barrier, leaving it dry and vulnerable.
Instead, consider chemical exfoliation. Chemical exfoliants, such as Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids (AHAs and BHAs). AHAs and BHAs remove dead skin cells without causing physical damage. Examples include glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acid.
These exfoliants work by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing them to be removed without scrubbing. As a result, your skin will look smoother and more radiant, and your inflamed acne will be less likely to worsen.
Always consult with a skincare professional to determine the right exfoliation method for your specific skin type and concerns. And remember, gentle care is essential when dealing with inflamed acne.
Have a great day!
