Ask the Expert: Unraveling the Truth about Retinol, Waxing, and SPF!

Hey there!

Welcome back to our newly launched series, Ask the Expert!

This week, we’re peeling back the layers on some of your burning questions about retinol, waxing, and SPF.

Question 1: Why can’t you do facial waxing if you’re using retinol or undergoing Accutane treatment?

Retinol stimulates skin cell turnover, which means it peels away the outer layer of your skin to reveal fresh new cells beneath. This can leave your skin vulnerable to injury, which is why waxing while using retinol can cause damage to your skin.

Accutane shuts off your oil glands. Waxing while on this medication can cause severe skin lifting, which can cause significant skin damage and scarring.

Question 2: Does retinol really thin your skin?

Myth busting time: retinol doesn’t thin your skin. In fact, it does the opposite. Yes, you may experience some peeling when you first start using retinol. However, this is simply a result of your skin adapting. Retinol promotes collagen production, which aids in the thickening of your skin over time.

Q3: Should I use SPF overnight for blue light protection?

While blue light protection is crucial, applying SPF overnight won’t give you the desired effect.

Instead, protect your skin during the hours you’re exposed to screens.

Give your skin the chance to rest and rejuvenate while you sleep.
